“Japan, the Country of Water”
Japan is rich in natural beauty.
Each season has its own unique color.
The wealth comes from an abundance of water,
Fostering the cultural cuisine of land and sea.
If you trace all the rivers on a map of Japan,
Lines like blood vessels emerge.
Water permeates the islands.
The many rivers provide drinking water
And irrigate the rice crops, our staple food.
Japan is surrounded by the ocean,
With its endless supply of salt,
Necessary to human life.
Since ancient times, the sea has also been a source
Of great quantities of seafood and seaweed.
In our mythology, the sister goddesses,
Toyotama-hime and Tamayori-hime,
Are famously associated with water.
They preside over beauty and harmony
In the spiritual world of Ryūgū,
Which is guarded by a male deity called Ryūjin,
Who sometimes creates powerful hurricanes.
The unseen support of the spiritual world
Nourishes our country and makes the crops grow well.
We are grateful to Japan not only for what it gives to us,
But also for what it will one day contribute to the world.
「水の国、日本」
日本は自然豊かな国
春夏秋冬それぞれの色彩を放つ
山海の幸に恵まれた食文化が醸成された
その根源にあるのが水の豊富さだ
日本地図に大小さまざまな河川を描くと
まるで血管のような線が浮かび上がる
水が列島全体に染み渡っている
川が豊富だということは飲料水に困らない
主食である米の耕作ができる
360度海に囲まれている日本列島
人間が生きていく上で必要不可欠な
ミネラル含有の塩が無尽蔵にある
食料としての魚介類や海藻も豊富で
古代から恵まれた環境が今に続く
神話の世界では水に関わる神さまとして
豊玉姫と玉依姫の姉妹の女神が有名だ
竜宮界という霊界で
「美」「調和」を司っている
男神の霊体は龍神として竜宮界を警護し
時々荒神となり嵐や暴風を起こす
日本の豊かさは霊的世界に支えられている
目に見えない支えがあっての豊穣だ
「水の国、日本」に感謝したい
そして与えられるだけではなく
与える国となり世界に貢献したい
